Art. 17 TFEU Dialogue: COMECE in Tallinn with the EU Presidency
COMECE, together with its ecumenical partners and the current EU Presidency, organised in Tallinn the conference “Securitisation of Religious Freedom - Religion and Scope of State Control" on the role of religion and Churches in the European Union.
The conference was an opportunity to restate the commitment of COMECE to strengthen the dialogue between Church and public institutions, including the EU - particularly after the successful experience of (Re)Thinking Europe.
During the event, Bishop Philippe Jourdan, Apostolic Administrator of Tallinn and COMECE delegate, identified Church autonomy and the protection of State-Church relations within the Member States on the basis of Article 17(1) TFEU as two priorities of the Catholic Church.
COMECE appreciates the involvement of the Estonian Presidency in co-organising this type of event. It is a practice to be repeated, built upon and improved. This would also require going beyond religion-related topics and discussing the contribution of Churches and religious associations or communities to the full range of EU policies and legislation, thereby implementing Article 17 TFEU.
COMECE hopes that this positive experience would lead to the reintegration of the institution of the EU Presidency as one of the actors of the annual high-level gathering between EU and religious leaders.
