The COMECE Legal Affairs Commission – an instrument of exchange among national Church experts and dialogue with the EU institutions – gathered on March 20th 2018 under the Presidency of Mgr. Hoogenboom to debate on number of topics relevant to the status of Churches in the Member States (Article 17(1) TFEU).

In this context, participants also exchanged on case law – at the EU Court and at the national level – that can directly impact on the life of the Church: areas covered concerned e.g. non-discrimination, data protection, freedom of religion.

The reform of the Transparency Register was also addressed in Dialogue with representatives of the European Commission and a fruitful exchange was also held with the Holy See on the Bishops’ Conferences implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation.

The Legal Affairs Commission will gather again on October 15th, 2018, and it will focus again on Churches and occupational requirements, as well as on data protection.

The EU expresses itself in legal terms and the COMECE Legal Affairs Commission plays the important role of exchanging, in Dialogue with the EU institutions, on policies and legislative initiatives that practically impact on the life of Catholics in the European Union.
