COMECE President comments on Card. Marx's resignation offered to Pope Francis

Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich poses for photographers prior to meeting relatives and friends after he was elevated to cardinal by Pope Francis, at the Vatican, Saturday, Oct. 5, 2019. Pope Francis has chosen 13 men he admires and whose sympathies alIt is with great respect that I received the news that H. Em. Cardinal Reinhard Marx has offered Pope Francis his resignation as Archbishop of Munich and Freising.

The Cardinal's decision must be the result of a profound and courageous inner reflection, towards which we must have deep respect. His decision mirrors the seriousness that has always characterised his pastoral activity. I am sorry for his resignation but I have a profound respect for Cardinal Marx and his decision.

In 2018, I succeeded Cardinal Marx as President of COMECE. His contribution as German Bishop Delegate first and as President of COMECE after, has been extremely precious, making COMECE a more dynamic actor in the dialogue with the institutions of the European Union as contributor to human-centered policies in support of the common good.
