Serbia and the European Union: Churches in dialogue

Press Release - 18 July 2000 Deeper co-operation between Catholic bishops from Western Europe and Serbian Orthodox Bishops follows meetings in Belgrade.

At the invitation of the Serbian Orthodox Church, a number of Catholic bishops from European Union member states visited Serbia on 13-17 July 2000 as part of a delegation from the Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the European Community. The focus of their meeting was three days of discussions on themes of theological and pastoral interest. The bishops prayed in monasteries and churches of the Serbian Orthodox Church. They visited a refugee camp in Belgrade as well as buildings and bridges that were destroyed by the war. In a joint statement at the end of their talks, both delegations called for an end to the economic sanctions imposed against Yugoslavia. They agreed on the continuation of the dialogue, on a youth exchange and on deeper co-operation between their charitable organisations.
