Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem meets Javier Solana

Press Release - 22 October 2002 His Beatitude Michel Sabbah, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem and President of Pax Christi International, today held a meeting with Dr Javier Solana, High Representative of the European Union for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, in Brussels.

Patriarch Sabbah and Dr Solana discussed the current state of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The Patriarch was accompanied by Etienne De Jonghe, Secretary General of Pax Christi International, and Mgr Noël Treanor, Secretary General of the Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the European Community (COMECE). As the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Michel Sabbah is the spiritual leader of the Catholic community in the Holy Land. Born in Nazareth, he was the first Palestinian to be appointed Patriarch of Jerusalem in 1987. He has been President of Pax Christi International, the international Catholic movement for peace, since 1999. Dr Solana, in his capacity as EU High Representative, is a member of the Strategic Quartet responsible for co-ordinating the international community's response to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, alongside Kofi Annan (Secretary General of the United Nations), Colin Powell (US Secretary of State) and Igor Ivanov (Russian Foreign Minister).
