Executive Committee: Global Governance and the European Convention

Press Release - 1 October 2002 The Executive Committee of the Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the European Community (COMECE), meeting in Brussels on 30 September 2002, discussed progress towards a system of global governance as well as the place of Churches and religious communities in a future constitutional treaty of the European Union.

The Bishops were presented with an update of the report Global Governance: Our responsibility to make globalisation an opportunity for all, published in October 2001 (see attachment - copies of the original report are available from the COMECE Secretariat). The update re-assesses the conclusions of the report following the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 and evaluates recent initiatives towards better global governance, such as the conferences in Doha (world trade), Monterrey (financing for development) and Johannesburg (sustainable development). It also addresses the criticisms that were made of the report, in particular by non-governmental organisations. The Executive Committee also discussed the work of the European Convention towards drafting a constitutional treaty for the European Union. It took note of the contributions made over recent months by the COMECE Secretariat in co-operation with the Church and Society Commission of the Conference of European Churches, in particular the legislative proposal for the status of Churches and religious communities in a constitutional treaty, submitted to the Convention on 27 September (see attachment). The members of the Executive Committee are: - Bishop Josef Homeyer, Bishop of Hildesheim, Germany (President of COMECE); - Bishop Adrianus van Luyn SDB, Bishop of Rotterdam, Netherlands (Vice-President); - Bishop Attilio Nicora, Italian Bishops' Conference (Vice-President) - Mgr Noël Treanor, Secretary General of COMECE. The Apostolic Nuncio to the European Communities, Archbishop Faustino Saínz-Muñoz, also takes part in meetings of the Executive Committee. ENDS

COMECE is a commission of the Catholic Bishops' Conferences of the member states of the European Union.
