Europe's religious heritage recognised in draft EU Constitution
Press Release - 28 May 2003 The Presidium of the European Convention today agreed a draft Preamble to the Treaty establishing the EU Constitution (see below). Rev. Rüdiger Noll, director of the Church and Society Commission of the Conference of European Churches (CEC) and Mgr Noël Treanor, Secretary General of the Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the European Community (COMECE) made the following statement:

The Convention on the Future of Europe is putting the final touches to a draft constitutional treaty, and the accession next year of ten new member states will transform not only the image but also the identity of the EU. Against this background the Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the European Community is today publishing "Let us open our hearts", an invitation to examine European integration from a Christian perspective.

Press Release ? 14 October 2003 In a meeting today at Rome?s Palazzo Chigi, representatives of the Churches discussed their role in the European unification process with Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. They emphasised the need to guarantee religious freedom, respect for the existing juridical relations in EU member states, and the development of an open, transparent and regular dialogue. They also made a fresh call for a reference to Europe?s Christian roots in the Preamble of the future EU Constitution.
