2nd series of seminars - 2009-2010 on ISLAM, CHRISTIANITY AND EUROPE

Wednesday 14 July 2010:

The role of religious actors in the fight against discrimination and defamation on religious grounds

Venue: COMECE, Square de Meeûs 19 - 1050 Brussels

In recent years, discrimination and defamation on religious grounds has been a major problem in Europe and the European neighbourhood. One example is the increasing popularity of anti-Islamic rhetoric, manifest in the success of populist xenophobic parties during recent elections on EU, national and local level. Anti-Semitism has equally been on the rise. While some resentments and discrimination have their roots in a general anti-religious attitude, affecting Christians, Muslims and Jews, much of it is based on the rejection of religions of foreigners or minorities. In such cases, all religious communities have a vital role to play in combating the prejudices and misconceptions behind such discrimination. The seminar will therefore ask what past experiences with religious defamation in Europe teach us and how Churches and religious communities can respond to discrimination on religious grounds: what is their role to strengthen mutual understanding and how can they interact with civil society and politics - including EU level - to foster peaceful and tolerant societies?
