Commission on Legal Affairs

The Commission on Legal Affairs monitors and prepares statements and contributions to the ongoing legal work of the EU, especially in those areas with a direct impact on the work/functioning of the Catholic Church in the EU (legislation on work, data-protection, state-church relationship, fundamental rights, Art. 17 e.a.) and topics of importance for the State–Church relationship in the Member States.
Its President is Bishop Theodorus C.M. Hoogenboom (Auxiliary Bishop of Utrecht, The Netherlands) and its Secretary is Alessandro Calcagno (Legal adviser at the COMECE secretariat). The members of this Commission are Legal experts nominated by the EU Bishops’ Conferences.
