Latvia

 

Archbishop Zbigņevs Stankevičs was born on 15 February, 1955 in Lejasciems, in the district of Gulbene (Latvia). He studied engineering in Riga (Latvia) and worked in this area until 1990. In 1996 he obtained a Master’s degree in theology from the Faculty of Theology of John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin (Poland). He was ordained a priest in Riga on 16 June, 1996. He served as a priest in Riga, was the spiritual father of the Metropolitan Seminary of Riga, was responsible for the charismatic community “Effata”, as well as professor of the Metropolitan Seminary of Riga and Catechetical Institute in Riga.

 

Zbigņevs Stankevičs later studied at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome (Italy), where he obtained a licentiate’s degree in fundamental theology in 2004 and a doctorate in theology in 2008. He then returned to Latvia and continued his pastoral work in Riga, as well as working as a director and professor at the Riga Higher Institute of Religious Sciences to the Pontifical Lateran University.

 

On 8 August, 2010 Zbigņevs Stankevičs was ordained an Archbishop in Riga Cathedral. Now Metropolitan Archbishop of Riga Zbigņevs Stankevičs is a professor of the Metropolitan Seminary of Riga, professor and moderator at Riga Theological Institute and professor and moderator at the Riga Higher Institute of Religious Sciences to the Pontifical Lateran University. In 2012, he has been appointed as a member of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity.

 

Metropolitan Archbishop of Riga Zbigņevs Stankevičs has been a member of COMECE since 2011.
