Ferenc Cserhati was born 12 February 1947 in Turterebesch (Romania). He was ordained a priest on 18 April 1971. He studied theology in Frankfurt am Main (Germany) and then in Innsbruck (Austria), where he was awarded a doctorate in theology.
Following his appointment as Director and priest of the Hungarian Catholic Mission in Munich and as tutor for theology at the University of Gyulafehérvár he was the West European delegate representing the Hungarian bishop on foreign affairs from 1996-2006 and the chief editor of the ecclesiastical newspaper Eletünk. In 2002 he became the delegate of the German Bishops’ Conference for pastoral care for Hungarian speaking Catholics in Germany.
Since his consecration as a bishop on 15 August 2007 Ferenc Cserháti has been Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese Esztergom-Budapest and Titular Bishop of Centuria; since 2008 he has been head of the Commission for migrants of the Hungarian Bishops’ Conference.
Auxiliary Bishop Cserháti has been a member of COMECE since 2007.
