Archbishop Jorge Ortiga was born on 5 March 1944 in Brufe. He studied in the seminaries of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, S. Tiago and in Braga. In 1967 he was ordained priest. He also studied Church History at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome where he finished his university education in 1970.
In 1981 he became episcopal vicar for the clerics and integrated within the metropolitan chapter of Braga. On 3 January 1988 he was consecrated bishop. He assumed his office as Archbishop of Braga on 18 July 1999. Between 2005 and 2011 he was President of the Portuguese Bishops’ Conference.
He is a Member of COMECE since March 2017.
