In dialogue with the European Data Protection Board, experts delegated by EU Bishops’ Conferences extensively exchanged on challenges and solutions concerning the GDPR, with particular attention to its impact on the Church in Member States.

Participants also discussed with European Commission representatives on initiatives to counter fake news and disinformation – a topic on which COMECE produced a detailed contribution in 2018 – as well as on the new Audiovisual Media Services Directive, with a focus on religious programming, protection of minors and tackling incitement to hatred.

Furthermore, the meeting provided a forum for internal exchanges on recent legal developments at the EU, Council of Europe and national levels.

The next meeting of the COMECE Legal Affairs Commission is scheduled for February-March 2020, and its agenda will be centered on the initiatives of the new European Commission.
