The COMECE Presidency meets with Pope Francis

 

Following the May 2019 elections of the European Parliament, the COMECE Presidency met with Pope Francis on Thursday 6 June 2019 to discuss on future challenges for the Church’s dialogue with the EU.

 

 

Recalling their statement “Rebuilding community in Europe”, inviting European citizens to responsible participation, EU Bishops exchanged with Pope Francis their assessment of the coming challenges for the EU and the role it is called to play in Europe and at the international level.

 

Following the meeting with the Holy Father, Mgr. Jean-Claude Hollerich SJ,COMECE President stated: “We could perceive the Holy Father’s serious concerns about Europe, peace, migrants, the danger of populism. All this has an important place in his heart”.

 

During the three-days visit to the Vatican, the COMECE delegation met with Card. Pietro Parolin (Secretary of State), Mgr. Paul Gallagher (Secretary for Relations with States), Card. Peter Turkson and the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, and Card. Marc Ouellet (Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops) to exchange views on the role of the Church in contributing to the promotion of the common good in the EU, particularly towards the most vulnerable.

 

The COMECE Presidency also met with its CCEE counterpart to exchange on areas of cooperation combining the political dialogue run by COMECE with the EU since 1980 and the pastoral work carried out by CCEE in the European continent.
