NEWS | EU Bishops to gather in Poland for COMECE Plenary Assembly on 17-19 April

10 April - Delegates from the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union will gather in Łomża, Poland, for the Spring COMECE Plenary Assembly on 17-19 April 2024. Marking 20 years after the big EU enlargement, the Assembly will delve into the voices of Central and Eastern Europe in light of the forthcoming European elections.

The Assembly’s agenda includes three main sessions, focusing on the European Union’s integration process, its perception from Central and Eastern Europe, and future directions amid geopolitical challenges. The Assembly is hosted by H.E. Mgr. Janusz Stepnowski, Bishop of Łomża and Polish Bishop Delegate to COMECE.

STATEMENT | COMECE issues statement ahead of EP vote on the inclusion of abortion in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights

9 April - Ahead of the vote by the European Parliament on the Resolution for the ‘Inclusion of the right to abortion in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights’ (2024/2655 RSP), scheduled for Thursday, 11 April 2024, the Presidency of the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union (COMECE) has issued the following statement.

9 April - The European Parliament recently voted to include the right to abortion in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. In response, President Mgr. Mariano Crociata and General Secretary Fr. Manuel Barrios Prieto of COMECE expressed their concerns to the international press. Mgr. Crociata stated: “The suppression of human life is not a human right.”

NEWS | COMECE hosts meeting of the General Secretaries of EU Episcopates
|
|
12 April - The General Secretaries of the EU Bishops' Conferences met at the COMECE Secretariat in Brussels. This gathering allowed them to reflect on the priorities of COMECE's mission of dialogue with the institutions of the European Union. They also exchanged views on key issues facing the Church at both national and European levels. The annual meeting, chaired by Fr. Manuel Barrios Prieto, the Secretary General of COMECE, featured a dialogue session with COMECE advisers on a range of EU dossiers.

NEWS | Group of Slovak priests visit COMECE
|
|
12 April - COMECE welcomed a group of Slovak priests and lay people. The group was received by Adviser Marek Misak and Intern Nina Danišová, who presented our mission of dialogue with the EU institutions, as well as our advocacy work in the fields of migration and peace, with particular attention to the situation in Ukraine.

NEWS | ESA held a Breakfast event at the European Parliament promoting Sunday protection
|

12 April - The European Sunday Alliance (ESA) held a Breakfast event on the protection of Sunday in EU policies regarding mental health and loneliness. The event took place at the European Parliament and it was hosted by MEP Miriam Lexmann.

NEWS | Delegation of Palestinian Christians visits COMECE
|
|
10 April - The Secretariat of COMECE received a delegation of the Nassar family, Palestinian Christians running the Tent of Nations farm as a sign of hope and peace amid the ongoing struggle for justice and the continued threat of land confiscation. The group was received by Fr. Manuel Barrios Prieto (General Secretary) and Marek Misak (Adviser).

NEWS | COMECE Convenes in Marseille for MED24 to explore strategies for assisting Migrants
|
|
10 April - COMECE Adviser José Luis Bazán participated in the MED24 organised by the Diocese of Marseille (France) following Pope Francis' appeal for a wave of humanity and dignity across the Mediterranean. Aimed at creating a spiritual/human support network, participants brainstormed ways to assist migrants.

NEWS | EUREGIO Bishops sign pastoral letter 'Un souffle nouveau pour l'Europe'
|
|
9 April - The Bishops of EUREGIO gathered at la Maison Robert Schuman in Moselle, France, to sign a pastoral letter entitled 'Un souffle nouveau pour l'Europe.' This letter aims to provide new impetus for European integration ahead of the 2024 European Parliament elections. COMECE's First Vice-President, Mgr. Antoine Hérouard, attended the event alongside the Apostolic Nuncio to the European Union, Mgr. Noel Treanor. The EUREGIO bishops who signed the letter are from Luxembourg, Trier, Metz, Nancy, Verdun, Troyes, Namur, and Liège.

23-24 April COMECE will participate in the Budapest Conference on the EU Pact on Migration.

24 April A group of young people will visit the COMECE Secretariat to learn more about COMECE's mission of dialogue with the EU institutions. The meeting is facilitated by Don Bosco International (DBI).
