ECUMENISM | His Eminence Archbishop Nikitas is the new President of CEC. Mgr. Crociata congratulates on behalf of EU Catholic Bishops

19/06 - H.E. Mgr. Mariano Crociata, President of COMECE, congratulated His Eminence Archbishop Nikitas on his election as President of the Conference of European Churches (CEC), which took place in Tallinn on Monday 19 June 2023.
Mgr. Crociata thanked the outgoing President, Rev. Christian Krieger, for the excellent cooperation in recent years, and expressed his best wishes and prayers to Archbishop Nikitas. The term of office of the new CEC President is five years. Mgr. Crociata praised the consolidated experience of collaboration and mutual understanding between COMECE and CEC, and expressed his wishes to "renew and continue this cooperation with even more conviction and dedication”.

In the course of his public greetings, Mgr. Crociata stated: “As the tragic war against Ukraine rages on, common understandings and projects are necessary to overcome conflict and create ways of reconciliation and peace”.

18/06 - We share the text of the homily offered by the President of COMECE, H.E. Mgr. Mariano Crociata, during the Holy Mass celebrated by the Apostolic Administrator of Estonia, Mgr. Philippe Jourdan, in the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Tallinn (Estonia).
Mgr. Crociata and General Secretary Fr. Manuel Barrios Prieto were in the Estonian capital city to participate as an invited guests at the 2023 General Assembly of the Conference of European Churches (CEC), one of COMECE’s main ecumenical partners in its advocacy work with EU institutions.

Mariano Crociata participated on 9-10 June 2023 in a high-level meeting held in Rome by the European People’s Party (EPP) and offered a reflection on the role that Christian values should play in the European Union and its approach to global responsibility. In the context of this event, members of the European Parliament exchanged on the future of Europe and the role of Christianity.

NEWS | COMECE and CEC hold prayer for peace and Christian unity at European Parliament

06/06 - To mark Pentecost, COMECE together with the Conference of European Churches (CEC) held a Prayer for Peace and Christian Unity at the European Parliament in Brussels.
In his contribution, the President of COMECE addressed the ongoing war in Ukraine and stated: “A justpeace has been the incessant and urgent request of the Church and of COMECE. I am sure that the European Parliament will continue to contribute to achieving this goal.
The COMECE-CEC joint initiative featured a reflection offered by Prof. Tomáš Halík on the beginnings of the Church at Pentecost as a “sacrament of understanding” and on its role in the current historical moment. The event was highly attended by MEPs, EU officers and representatives of Brussels-based Christian stakeholders. The event was hosted by MEP Jan Olbrycht.

NEWS | COMECE General Secretary exchanges with Polish Ambassador to the EU

05/06 - COMECE General Secretary Fr. Manuel Barrios Prieto met with Andrzej Sados, Polish Permanent Representative to the European Union, to discuss the contribution elaborated by COMECE, CELAM, Caritas Europa and Caritas Latin America and Caribbean to the upcoming EU-CELAC summit. The meeting was also an opportunity to discuss about the ongoing war in Ukraine, the upcoming Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU and the status of democracy in Europe.

31/05 - While in Stockholm for the COMECE-CEC ecumenical delegation's meeting with the Swedish Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the President of COMECE, Mgr. Mariano Crociata, spoke with the national press on migration and asylum EU policies, emphasising the need to respect the dignity and fundamental rights of migrants and asylum seekers at all stages of the process.
Mgr. Crociata also highlighted the positive contribution that Churches can give in strengthening unity in the EU, as well as tackling the phenomenon of loneliness.

Invited by Members of the Greek Parliament, Fr. Manuel Barrios Prieto will be in Greece to participate in the General Assembly of the Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy.

The Secretary General of COMECE will be in Rome for a meeting of the Ecclesial Networks Alliance for Integral Ecology in Rome. The event is organised by Dicastery for the Promotion of Integral Human Development.

14 July
Upon invitation of H.Em. Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich SJ, the team of the COMECE Secretariat will visit the Archdiocese of Luxembourg.
