🔴 NEWS | COMECE warmly welcomes Bishop Treanor’s appointment as new Apostolic Nuncio to the EU

26/11 - Pope Francis has appointed H.E. Mgr. Noël Treanor, Bishop of the Irish diocese of Down and Connor, as the new Apostolic Nuncio to the European Union, succeeding to the late Mgr. Aldo Giordano.
COMECE President Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich SJ congratulates Monsignor Noël Treanor with the following statement: “On behalf of the COMECE Assembly and Secretariat, I would like to express my joy for this announcement. Since decades, Bishop Treanor is a paramount figure for the Church in the European Union. He accompanied the European integration process in an extraordinary manner. In consideration of his long-standing experience at COMECE, I am certain that our cooperation will be particularly strong and effective for the promotion of the common good in Europe. I wish him strength. May God assist him in his important mission”.
The new Apostolic Nuncio has a profound knowledge of the functioning of the European institutions due to his experience as General Secretary of COMECE (1993-2008), Delegate of the Irish Episcopate to COMECE (2009-2022), Vice-President of COMECE (2018-2022), as well as President of Justice and Peace Europe (2018-2022).

NEWS | The President of the Slovak Bishops’ Conference visits COMECE

28/11 - COMECE has received a delegation from the Slovak Episcopate led by its President H.E. Mgr. Bernard Bober to exchange on the role of the Catholic Church in addressing today’s challenges faced by the European Union and its citizens. Archbishop Bober: “COMECE is an expression of the Catholic Church’s care for the European project”.

William Kenney CP, from the Catholic Bishops' Conference of England and Wales, to exchange on the recent activities of the Santa Marta Group and the contribution of the Church in the fight against human trafficking and modern day slavery. COMECE General Secretary will participate in the XXIV Annual EPP Group Intercultural Dialogue with Churches and Religious Institutions to take place in Vienna, Austria. The event will focus on the reaction of Churches and religious communities to war, conflict and their contribution in shaping the evolution of the European Union.
