26/11 - Pope Francis has appointed H.E. Mgr. Noël Treanor, Bishop of the Irish diocese of Down and Connor, as the new Apostolic Nuncio to the European Union, succeeding to the late Mgr. Aldo Giordano.
COMECE President Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich SJ congratulates Monsignor Noël Treanor with the following statement: “On behalf of the COMECE Assembly and Secretariat, I would like to express my joy for this announcement. Since decades, Bishop Treanor is a paramount figure for the Church in the European Union. He accompanied the European integration process in an extraordinary manner. In consideration of his long-standing experience at COMECE, I am certain that our cooperation will be particularly strong and effective for the promotion of the common good in Europe. I wish him strength. May God assist him in his important mission”.
The new Apostolic Nuncio has a profound knowledge of the functioning of the European institutions due to his experience as General Secretary of COMECE (1993-2008), Delegate of the Irish Episcopate to COMECE (2009-2022), Vice-President of COMECE (2018-2022), as well as President of Justice and Peace Europe (2018-2022).
