STATEMENT | COMECE raises the alarm about the potential risks of the new EU Pact on Migration and Asylum

22/12 - In response to the recently reached agreement on the new EU Pact on Migration and Asylum, COMECE issues a statement raising the alarm about the potential risk that “the European Union will fail to protect the right to asylum and other human rights”.

HOLY LAND | Mgr. Crociata at the EU Commission for a high-level meeting on Holy Land
|
|
19/12 - H.E. Mgr. Mariano Crociata, President of COMECE, participated in an Article 17 TFEU high-level meeting between the European Commission and EU religious leaders on the current situation in the Holy Land. Mgr. Crociata urged all religions to "strongly condemn dangerous phenomena such as anti-Semitism, radicalisation, xenophobia, which are gaining ground in EU societies due to the Israel-Hamas war".

The meeting was hosted by Margaritis Schinas, Vice-President of the European Commission in charge of promoting our European Way of Life, and acting European Commissioner for International Partnerships.

NEWS | EU Enlargement, COMECE President welcomes the historic decision of the European Council
|
|
15/12 - Commenting on the recent decision of the European Council regarding EU enlargement, H.E. Mgr. Mariano Crociata, President of COMECE, "congratulated Ukraine and Moldova on the opening of EU accession negotiations, as well as Georgia for having been granted the status of a candidate country."
|
Mgr. Crociata equally expressed hope that "accession negotiations can soon start with Bosnia and Herzegovina, once the necessary criteria have been achieved".
|
In this context, he said that "in view of completing the European Union, a successful EU integration of the Western Balkan as well as the Eastern European countries is of strategic importance for stability, prosperity and peace on the European continent."

13/12 - Following the end of COP28, COMECE released a statement of its General Secretary Fr. Manuel Barrios Prieto, welcoming the difficult agreement reached on phasing out fossil fuels, but expressing concerns "about the real commitment of the parties to implement it effectively”.

22/12 - We are happy to announce that Marina Paula Oliveira, Brazilian human rights defender and former COMECE intern, was awarded the “Prix des droits de l’Homme 2023”, a prestigious award given by the French government to people who, often at the risk of their lives, defend the environment and human rights.

18/12 - On the occasion of International Migrants Day, COMECE released a statement underlying principles that should guide the ongoing trilogue negotiations on the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum.

NEWS | Development: COMECE welcomes EP recognition of the role of faith-based actors in education
|
|
13/12 - In the recently adopted Report “EU development cooperation to enhance access to education and training in developing countries”, the European Parliament recognises that local faith-based actors, alongside other civil society organisations, play an important role in mitigating the gaps where States fall short in ensuring access to quality education for all.
|
COMECE welcomes the Parliament’s prioritisation of education and training in EU’s development cooperation and appreciates its recognition of the valuable role of faith-based actors in this regard.

OPPORTUNITY | COMECE launches its 2024 internship programme
|
|
12/12 - COMECE launched its Internship Programme for Fall 2024, aiming to offer participants a comprehensive understanding of the European Union policy and decision-making processes, along with honing their advocacy skills.
|
Interns will have the chance to immerse themselves in the dynamic world of EU policy, gaining insights into the complexities of decision-making and contributing to the advocacy efforts of COMECE.
|
The placement is designed for a flexible duration, allowing interns to engage for a minimum of 3 months and up to a maximum of 5 months. The internship is set to begin in September 2024. Applications will be accepted until 16 February 2024.
