09/03 - H.Em. Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich SJ, President of COMECE, met with the Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia, Andrej Plenković, in Split (Croatia) to exchange on ways to address the current socio-economic crisis affecting EU Member States as result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The President of COMECE: "We all should strive for decisions that lead to more social justice and respect for the dignity of the human person". The meeting was an occasion to continue the high-quality dialogue started during Croatia’s Presidency of the EU Council in the first half of 2020.

EVENT | Africa-EU partnership: COMECE co-organises event on the Global Gateway at the European Parliament

07/03 - COMECE and its partners organised the conference “Africa-EU partnership of equals: how can we get there? Is the Global Gateway fit for purpose?”. Co-hosted at the European Parliament by MEPs Saskia Bricmont and Carlos Zorrinho, the event offered a space for frank, respectful and constructive dialogue amongst stakeholders with different perspectives on the Global Gateway’s strategy. Fr. Manuel Barrios Prieto, General Secretary of COMECE, stated that "the EU Global Gateway initiative should support locally-led sustainable human development and contribute to a partnership of equals between Africa and Europe".

DOCUMENT | COMECE offers recommendations on EU Human Rights Defenders Guidelines. “It is crucial to strengthen the protection and promotion of human rights and environmental defenders"

07/03 - COMECE offered some recommendations to the European Parliament in view of the upcoming debate and vote on the EU Guidelines on Human Rights Defenders. The recommendations are included in a document elaborated in close dialogue with human rights defenders in Latin America. They aim at strengthening and promoting human rights and environmental defenders worldwide who – as stated by the Holy Father Pope Francis – “risk their lives while fighting for fundamental rights under dictatorships, authoritarian regimes and even in democracies in crisis”.

07/03 - Brazilian human rights and environmental defender Marina Paula Oliveira contributed to the elaboration of COMECE working document on the European Parliament's vote about the EU Human Rights Defenders Guidelines (see the new above). She realised a video to call on the EU institutions to promote and protect the work of human rights and environmental defenders worldwide. Marina is a former intern of the COMECE Secretariat.

05/03 - Representatives of religious authorities and of the General Secretariat of the European Schools met for the first time to discuss current reforms in Religious Education and deepen cooperation and transparency. Among the participants, H.E. Mgr. Jean Kockerols (Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Mechelen-Brussels) and Emilio Dogliani (COMECE Adviser on Culture and Education). The next meeting is to take place in June 2023.

NEWS | COMECE meets with mayors from Slovakia to exchange on the crucial role of faith communities at the local level

28/02 - Representatives of COMECE met with a group of mayors from Slovakia at the European Parliament. It was an occasion to present COMECE's mission of dialogue with EU institutions and to exchange on the crucial role of faith communities in fostering the social fabric at local level. The meeting was facilitated by the Slovak Institute for Formation and Innovation in Politics.
