25/05 - COMECE gathered Church representatives, EU policy-makers and civil society actors at the European Parliament, in Brussels, in a roundtable dedicated to the war in Ukraine and on-going security challenges in the EU’s Eastern neighbourhood. Mgr. Vokál: “The EU needs to offer to the continent a renewed strategic vision for stability, justice and peace”.
The roundtable at the European Parliament took place in the context of the spring meeting of the COMECE Commission on External Relations of the EU, presided by Mgr. Vokál and focused on the promotion of a stable peace in the current geopolitical context, EU-Latin America partnership and EU-China relations. Read Mgr. Vokál’s speech

NEWS | Meeting of the COMECE Commission on EU External Relations

24-25/05 - The COMECE Commission on EU External Relations gathered in Brussels for its Spring meeting. The agenda included exchanges with EEAS officials, Members of the European Parliament, as well as with representatives of the Holy See, academia and civil society.
Among the topics discussed were pathways to a new architecture for peace in Europe against the background of the on-going war in Ukraine and its global implications, as well as EU’s partnership with Latin America and the Caribbean, and EU-China relations. The meeting was chaired by H.E. Mgr. Jan Vokál (Czech Republic) who was elected as the new President of this Commission at the 2023 Spring Plenary Assembly of COMECE. The Commission will gather next time in Brussels in the Autumn.

26/05 - COMECE, Open Doors, and Aid to the Church in Need co-organised a briefing with H.E. Mgr. Thabet Habib Mekko, Bishop of Alqosh (Iraq). During the meeting, the Bishop explained the main challenges that Christians face in the country, including the reconstruction of the Christian villages and cities destroyed by ISIS, the return of those Christians who had to flee and the protection of their houses and lands, as well as the need of international support for religious minorities in Iraq to preserve the fabric and the diversity of the society.

23/05 - COMECE received a delegation from Caritas Marsabit (Kenya) led by Mgr. Peter Kihara Kariuki. Our guests shared with us their work to address socio-economic, security & environmental challenges their community is facing. They encouraged the EU to focus more on localisation in its development and humanitarian action.

NEWS | Commission on Culture and Education meets for the first time since its establishment in late March

16-17/05 - Chaired by H.E. Mgr. Janusz Stepnowski, Bishop of Łomża (Poland), the COMECE Commission on Culture & Education met in Brussels to exchange on digital education of children and pupils, the role of Catholic Universities for the future if learning and teaching, and the protection of Christian cultural heritage. The Commission included various dialogue meetings with EU representatives, researchers and organisation representatives.
The COMECE Commission on Culture and Education was established in March 2023 by the Assembly of EU Bishops.
