DECLARATION | COMECE General Secretary: "there is no recognised right to abortion in European or International Law"

08/06 - "From a legal perspective, there is no recognised right to abortion in European or International Law. Therefore, no State can be obliged to legalize abortion, or to facilitate it, or be instrumental to perform it", stated Fr. Manuel Barrios Prieto, General Secretary of COMECE, in a public declaration released in view of a discussion of the European Parliament on “Global threats to abortion rights: the possible overturn of abortion rights in the US by the Supreme Court”. The day after, MEPs voted in favour a motion criticising US' highest court over its draft decision to overturn the landmark "Roe versus Wade case". In his declaration, the General Secretary also highlighted the "unacceptable interference in the democratic jurisdictional decisions of a sovereign state, a country that is also not a Member State of the EU".

INTERVIEW | COMECE comments on EP adoption of a resolution to uphold the right to abortion in the US Constitution

09/06 - Interviewed by Vatican News, Fr. Manuel Barrios Prieto, General Secretary of COMECE, commented the European Parliament's adoption of a resolution to uphold the right to abortion in the US Constitution. In his intervention, he reiterated COMECE's call for protecting the right of unborn children to life. During the interview, Fr. Barrios Prieto also called for the protection of women from social, family, professional and economic crises, noting that a woman who has other possibilities would be less likely to consider an abortion.

NEWS | COMECE participates in the CCEE meeting of communication officers of Bishops' Conferences in Europe

09-11/06 - COMECE participated in the annual CCEE meeting gathering Press Officers and Spokespersons of the Bishops' Conferences in Europe. This year the event was held in Tirana in collaboration with the Albanian Bishops' Conference. At the heart of the proceedings was “the commitment to peace and the synodal path”: together reflecting on the challenges facing the Church due to the conflict in Ukraine and in the light of the Synodal path initiated by Pope Francis.

The event was also a precious opportunity to inform other media experts on COMECE's new digital tools and strategies to step up the coordination among EU and European Bishops' Conferences in the field of communication. CCEE Press Release

17/06 - Fr. Manuel Barrios Prieto, General Secretary of COMECE, congratulated the Federation of Catholic Family Associations in Europe (FAFCE) for its 25-year anniversary. "While talking of the challenges families face, Pope Francis, during the audience on Friday 10 June 2022, mentioned the good collaboration between FAFCE and COMECE, of which - stated Fr. Barrios - we are proud".
