07/12 - An ecumenical delegation with members from the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union (COMECE) and of the Conference of European Churches (CEC) met with Petr Fiala, Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, to discuss efforts of the current EU Presidency in addressing some of the most pressing challenges the EU and its citizens are facing today.

07/12 - The Bishops of the European Union welcome the appointment of Frans van Daele as EU Special Envoy for the Promotion of Freedom of Religion or Belief outside the EU, made public on Wednesday 7 December 2022 by the Vice-President of the European Commission, Margaritis Schinas.
Cardinal Hollerich: “On behalf of the COMECE Assembly of EU Bishops, I congratulate Mr van Daele on his appointment. We are ready to cooperate with him. We take this opportunity to reiterate our call to the European Commission to provide the new EU Special Envoy with adequate resources, and a well-defined mandate, that will enable Mr van Daele to carry on his important responsibility to protect and promote Freedom of Religion, a fundamental right that is under threat in many parts of the world”. 📰 Press Release

SPEECH | COMECE General Secretary pays homage to former EU Apostolic Nuncio Mgr. Giordano at EPP event on future of Europe and religions

09/12 - "If Europe aims to be a world peacemaker, it must rediscover the talent of Christianity, which has been tempted to bury", stated Fr. Manuel Barrios Prieto, COMECE General Secretary, during a panel debate on the Future of Europe and religions in the context of the EPP Group Annual Meeting on Intercultural dialogue with Churches and Religious Institutions held in Vienna on 9-10 December 2022.
Fr. Barrios Prieto took this opportunity also to pay homage to the former Apostolic Nuncio to the European Union, H.E. Mgr. Aldo Giordano, on the first anniversary of his death, by reading the speech that Mgr. NEWS | Meeting of the COMECE Social Affairs Commission: focus on minimum income and disability employment package

05/12 - H.E. Mgr. Antoine HĂ©rouard chaired the autumn meeting of the COMECE Social Affairs Commission, which featured an exchange with EU officials on the minimum income and on the integration of people with disabilities into the labour market. The COMECE Social Affairs Commission is composed of the experts delegated by the EU Bishops' Conferences.

02/12 - COMECE participated in a Renovabis-KBK event in Cologne on the war in Ukraine and its implications for the EU Foreign and Security Policy. Our adviser Marek Misak highlighted the need for a credible EU enlargement process and for developing an ethical framework for EU defence.

02/12 - Mgr. Hrvoje Škrlec, Chargé d'Affaires of the Apostolic Nunciature to the EU and COMECE General Secretary Fr. Manuel Barrios Prieto co-celebrated a Holy Mass to remember H.E. Mgr. Aldo Giordano, former Apostolic Nuncio to the European Union, who died a year ago in Brussels.
