COMECE contributes to EP dialogue seminar on the EU Single Market

The Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union (COMECE) contributed to the event offering an overview of the achievements and persistent challenges of the EU Single Market. COMECE was represented by Professor Sergio Rodríguez López-Ros, Vice-Rector of the University Abat Oliba CEU (Spain). In his contribution, he focused on some of the key aspects of the EU Single Market, emphasising that it should not only be centred on wealth, institutions and growth, but also on equality, people and redistribution. 

“Only the dynamics offered by a community is capable of going beyond the purely economic. Without equitable and sustainable growth there is no social justice and without social justice there is no peace, understood not as the absence of war but as the absence of social conflicts in everyday life”, Prof. Rodríguez López-Ros stated. 

“More inclusive and fair economic models are needed for the benefit of all and essential to ensure that the EU project remains vibrant”, he added. 

The event was also an occasion for COMECE to encourage the EU institutions to address pressing challenges within our societies, among which sustainable development, work-life balance, Artificial Intelligence regulation, protection of personal data and youth participation. The Seminar was organised by Othmar Karas, Vice-President of the European Parliament responsible for the implementation of Article 17 (TFEU), which enshrines the dialogue between Churches and EU institutions.
