Experts of EU Bishops’ Conferences gathered in Brussels on Wednesday 26 June 2019 to participate in the COMECE Social Affairs Commission. They exchanged views on future Church’s contributions to EU social policies in the renewed institutional setting following the May 2019 elections of the European Parliament.

Participants analysed the results of the elections across the EU, addressed the challenges of political fragmentation to a more social Europe, and discussed the follow up of the European Pillar of Social Rights and on how to fight inequality in Europe.
In dialogue with EU policy experts and European trade union representatives, COMECE identified the next steps for more sustainable social and ecological EU policies.
Presided by Mgr. Antoine Hérouard, the Commission allowed participants to reflect on how to accelerate the ongoing ecological transition towards a carbon-free economy in a way to not leave anyone behind – as described in the COMECE reflection on the Future of Work.
This topic of integral ecology will be further discussed during the next meeting of the COMECE Social Affairs Commission, which will take place in Brussels on 20-21 November 2019.
