The next European elections are vital for our democracy: all citizens are called upon to cast their vote next 22-25 May to select the future European Parliament for 2014-2019. The outcome will greatly determine the direction taken by the EU for the next half decade and will have major implications for the people of Europe. The severe economic and social crisis is fuelling nationalism and populism in all Member States. The balance of power is changing on the global scene and several armed conflicts are challenging the role the EU wants to play in the world.
In this context, the Bishops of COMECE, representing the Catholic Bishops’ Conferences from all EU Member States, wish to recall the strong commitment of the Catholic Church to the European integration process, which is a project of Peace among nations. They also wish to offer guidance to the EU voter in forming his/her conscience by highlighting the central issues that have to be taken into consideration by citizens who care for the common good and the dignity of humankind.
The text of the COMECE Election Statement will be available in English, French, German, Polish, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Slovak and can be downloaded here : Link (from 20 March 14:00)
