Jean-Claude Hollerich was born on 9 August 1958 in Differdange, Luxemburg, and was ordained a priest on 21 April 1990 in Brussels (Belgium).
Between 2008 and 2011, he was Vice-Rector for the General and Student Affairs at the Sophia University in Tokyo. During the same period, he was Rector of the Jesuit Community of the Sophia University, which hosted 65 Jesuits from different countries and members of the Board of Trustees of the University.
On 12 July 2011, Pope Benedict XVI has nominated Father Jean-Claude Hollerich SJ Archbishop of Luxembourg. On 16 October, he was consecrated Bishop for the Archdiocese of Luxembourg. President of the Conference of European Justice and Peace Commissions (2014-2018), since September 2017 he is also President of the CCEE Commission for the youth.
Cardinal Hollerich has been a Bishop Delegate to COMECE since November 2011. He was President of COMECE in the period 2018-2023.
On 5 October 2019, Pope Francis elevated him to the dignity of Cardinal.
