In a short statement released on Wednesday, 4 March 2026, the President of the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union (COMECE), H.E. Mgr Mariano Crociata, expresses deep concern over the recent escalation of violence in Iran and across the Middle East, and calls on the EU and its Member States to promote de-escalation and relaunch diplomatic efforts. In the context of the new wave of violence in the Middle East, the President of the EU bishops warns that the ongoing crisis reflects “a weakening of the rules-based international order and a continued disregard for international law”, with violence once again prevailing over diplomatic solutions. He cautions that a logic of retaliation risks fuelling a dangerous spiral, threatening both regional and global stability.
Mgr Mariano Crociata calls on the European Union to remain united and to renew its vocation as a project of peace by promoting de-escalation, relaunching diplomatic efforts, and upholding international law, “including in the field of nuclear non-proliferation”.
The President of COMECE also urges the EU to ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens, both in the Middle East and within its borders, while addressing potential consequences such as disruptions to energy supply.
