COMECE warmly welcomes Archbishop Auza’s appointment as new Apostolic Nuncio to the EU

The Commission of the Bishops Conferences of the European Union (COMECE) warmly congratulates H.E. Mgr Bernardito Cleopas Auza on his appointment as Apostolic Nuncio to the European Union, officially announced today, Saturday 22 March 2025.

Today, Saturday 22 March 2025, Pope Francis appointed H.E. Mgr Bernardito Cleopas Auza, Archbishop of Suacia, as the new Apostolic Nuncio to the European Union, succeeding the late Mgr Noël Treanor, who passed away in August 2024.

Reacting to this news, COMECE President H.E. Mgr. Mariano Crociata, stated: “On behalf of COMECE, I warmly welcome this announcement with great joy. Archbishop Auza brings with him a remarkable legacy of diplomatic engagement and ecclesial service. For decades, he has played a pivotal role within the diplomatic service of the Holy See, demonstrating profound commitment and vision. I am confident that our collaboration will be both fruitful and impactful in advancing the common good in the European Union. I extend my heartfelt wishes for strength and wisdom in his mission. May God’s guidance be with him every step of the way.”

Born in Talibon (Philippines) in 1959, Archbishop Auza has extensive diplomatic experience, which began in 1990. Over the years, he has served in various Pontifical Representations around the world, including in Madagascar, Bulgaria, and Albania.

He has also worked within the Section for Relations with States and International Organisations at the Secretariat of State, as well as at the Permanent Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations in New York.

In May 2008, he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Haiti and given the titular archbishopric of Suacia. Later, in July 2014, he became the Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations in New York and Permanent Observer to the Organization of American States (OAS).

Most recently, in October 2019, Archbishop Auza was named Apostolic Nuncio to Spain and Andorra. He holds degrees in both Literature and Theology. He speaks French, English, Italian, Spanish and Tagalog.
