The Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union (COMECE) draws attention to the event “European Reconciliation. On the 60th anniversary of the Polish Bishops’ Appeal to the German Bishops”, which will take place at the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Wednesday, 21 January 2026, at 16:30.
The event aims to recall the historical and moral significance of the 1965 exchange of letters between the Polish and German bishops, widely regarded as a milestone in the process of Polish-German reconciliation and a meaningful contribution to the broader project of European integration. Issued at the close of the Second Vatican Council, the Polish bishops’ Message to the German bishops opened a new chapter in bilateral relations, rooted in truth, memory, dialogue and moral courage, crystallised in the words: “We forgive and ask for forgiveness.”
The reply of the German bishops affirmed forgiveness as the foundation for reconciliation and dialogue. Together, the two letters became an enduring reference for peacebuilding efforts in Europe and beyond.
The choice of the European Parliament as the venue highlights the continued relevance of the 1965 exchange for contemporary Europe. As an institution that emerged from a history of reconciliation after conflict, the Parliament offers a meaningful space to reflect on neighbourliness, historical responsibility and the transformation of conflict through dialogue.
The event is organised by the EPP Group and hosted by Members of the European Parliament Oliver Schenk and Andrzej Halicki. Contributions will be offered by H.E. Mgr Heinrich Timmerevers, bishop of Dresden-Meißen (Germany) and Andrzej Jerie, Director of The Depot History Centre.
The event will take place at the European Parliament (Area Canal Churchill, passerelle), Strasbourg, on Wednesday, 21 January 2026, at 16:30. The working languages will be English, Polish and German. Interpretation can be requested. Light refreshments and drinks will be provided.
