Strengthening synergies between COMECE and its member Bishops’ Conferences

The General Secretaries of the Bishops’ Conferences of the EU gathered at COMECE on 17 January 2019 in order to exchange views on key questions for the Catholic Church in the European Union and to enhance their synergy in addressing the many challenges European citizens are called to face in 2019.

The meeting, organised for the second consecutive year by COMECE, was an occasion of dialogue on current main EU and Church priorities, as well as on practical and technical questions within the field of competence of the European Union.

Participants focused their discussion on some topics having a direct impact on the daily activities of the Church, including the new EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which became applicable in May 2018. They also reflected on the actions carried out by the Church at the national level to comply with this updated EU rule.

The meeting offered the opportunity to explore new ways to strengthen the collaboration between COMECE and its member Bishops’ Conferences ahead of the main 2019 challenges including Brexit and the European elections, as well as the appointment of a new Commission, a new President of the Council and a new President of the Central Bank.
