Visit of Cardinal Charles Maung Bo, Archbishop of Rangoon, to Brussels

Cardinal Charles Maung Bo, Archbishop of Yangon (Rangoon) made a two-days visit to the EU Capital this 24 May.

Cardinal Charles Maung Bo became Burma/Myanmar’s first ever Cardinal in 2015, and has long been one of the most outspoken voices for human rights, religious freedom, inter-religious harmony, peace and justice in the country. He is the main defender of the Muslim Rohingya in Myanmar and the most vocal critic of the unbridled human trafficking that plagues his country (women kidnapped and sold to Chinese men).

COMECE, Christian Solidarity Worldwide, Aid to the Church in Need and Missio – Pontifical Mission Societies – hosted an internal meeting on 24 May between the Cardinal and MEPs from different political parties.

“We are Easter people” -said Cardinal Bo -” a new dawn has arisen. There is hope in Myanmar” Cardinal Bo highlighted in his intervention at COMECE the current challenges in Myanmar such as the need to reinforce democracy, protecting and promoting human rights for all, fighting poverty by developing education and health care systems and preventing ethnical and religious conflicts, and promoting justice, dialogue and reconciliation. His Eminence made a call to the EU and the international community to support this new positive steps in this democratic period of the country.

He also mentioned the Catholic Church’s role, as a major actor in the defence of human rights in Myanmar, as well as in the promotion of peace and reconciliation through interreligious dialogue and advocating for equal citizenship and equal rights for all.
