Organised by COMECE, together with Don Bosco International and Missiones Salesianas, the event will also be an occasion to meet with and listen to young people who suffered severe violations of their rights, while serving their sentence in adult prisons. In many countries of Africa, America and Asia, Salesian communities accompany these minors and take care of them in order to facilitate their reintegration into society.
Following the documentary, participants will reflect on broader implications of this phenomenon for EU and international policy makers.
Over 1.2 million minors in the world are inhumanely treated and deprived of their freedom in prisons and other detention centers. The Catholic Church seeks to explore and promote alternatives to prison, in order to ensure that children and young people who have committed crimes receive the necessary legal assistance, social support and education to be reintegrated into society.
