Bishop Juan Antonio Martínez Camino SJ

Auxiliary Bishop of Madrid

Bishop Martínez Camino was born in Santa Cruz de Marcenado, Spain, on 9 January 1953. He studied at the Pontifical Minor Seminary of Comillas and obtained a Degree in Philosophy and Arts from the University of Valladolid in 1976. On 24 May 1980 he was ordained a priest. In 1990 he received a Doctorate in Theology at the Theologische-philosophische Hochschule Sankt Georgen in Frankfurt am Main, Germany.

Rector of the Theologate of the León Province of the Society of Jesus in Madrid from 1986 to 1991, he was also Professor of Systematic Theology at the Universidad Pontificia Comillas in Madrid (1987-2001) and Professor of Dogmatic Theology at the San Dámaso Faculty of Theology in Madrid since 2003.

On 17 November 2007, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Madrid and titular Bishop of Bigastro (Cehegín). He was General Secretary of the Spanish Bishops’ Conference (2003-2013) and a member of the Episcopal Commission for Interconfessional Relations (2014-2017).

Since April 2022 he is the Bishop Delegate of the Spanish Bishops’ Conference to COMECE.
