Bishop Nuno Brás da Silva Martins

Bishop of Funchal

Bishop Nuno Brás da Silva Martins was born on 12 May 1963 in Vimeiro, Portugal. He graduated in Theology from the Portuguese Catholic University in 1985 and five years later he earned his Master’s degree in Systematic Theology. After studying Social Communication, in 1999 he received his doctorate in Fundamental Theology from the Gregorian Pontifical University in Rome.

In 2011 he was consecrated Bishop of Elvas and Auxiliary Bishop of the Patriarchate of Lisbon by Pope Benedict XVI. Active academically in social communication and as associated professor and member of the scientific committee of the Portuguese Catholic University, Mgr. Nuno Brás da Silva is Bishop of Funchal since 2019.

In 2020 he was elected Portuguese Bishop Delegate to COMECE and in March 2023 the COMECE Assembly elected him Vice-President.
