The Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union (COMECE) comments on Wednesday 13 December 2023 the end of COP28 recently held in Dubai. Fr. Barrios Prieto: “We welcome the difficult agreement reached on phasing out fossil fuels, but we are concerned about the real commitment of the parties to implement it effectively”.

After the conclusion of the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) held in Dubai from 30 November until 12 December 2023, Fr. Manuel Barrios Prieto, the General Secretary of COMECE, comments: COMECE welcomes the consensus on some essential issues, such as addressing Loss & Damage earnestly and phasing out fossil fuels in a just way. At the same time – he highlights – we are concerned that the vague language may indicate a lack of serious commitment. We appeal to the parties to overcome partisan interests and take concrete steps for the sake of the common good, the care of our Common Home and intergenerational justice.”
