The Mass was concelebrated by Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich S.J., Monsignor Mariano Crociata, Monsignor Lode Aerts, Monsignor Virgil Bercea, Monsignor Leo Wagener, Monsignor Itaruma (Nunciature), and Prelate Karl Jüsten (Katholisches Büro).
The homily was delivered by Cardinal Hollerich, who spoke about the scandal of death being overcome by the love of God.
Many people participated in the Mass, and numerous others, including high representatives of the Church and the European Union institutions, expressed their condolences for the unexpected death of Monsignor Noël Treanor, which occurred on Sunday, 11 August 2024, at the age of 73.
Monsignor Treanor served as General Secretary of COMECE between 1993 and 2008, and as the Bishop Delegate of the Irish Episcopate to the COMECE Assembly between 2009 and 2022. From 2018 to 2022, he was also Vice President of COMECE and President of Justice and Peace Europe.
In 2022, he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to the European Union by Pope Francis.
The Diocese of Down and Connor (Ireland) has provided the following funeral arrangements:
Sunday 18 August
Archbishop Treanor’s remains will be received at St Peter’s Cathedral at 6.00pm, followed by the Liturgical Vigil for the Deceased.
Monday 19 August
The Cathedral will be open from 8.00am-8.00pm for those who wish to pay their respects.
Parish Mass will be celebrated at 10.00am as usual.
Evening Prayer of the Church will be celebrated at 7.00pm.
Tuesday 20 August
Solemn Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 12.00 noon, followed by burial in the Cathedral Chapel of the Resurrection.
